YOUR SEAT VIEW AT THE INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY FOR THE BRICKYARD 400 AND INDY 500
Written By Rob McNevin
GRANDSTAND J: On the outside of the front straightaway just at the exit of turn 4, you will find Grandstand J. The seats in this grandstand are bench seats with no back and the grandstand has no roof covering it. The closest parking lot to these seats is Lot 1B, 1C, 6 and 2 all of which are on the west side of Georgetown Road directly across from the speedway. As is true with most seating selections at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the best views of the track are found up high in this grandstand in the double letter rows. Fans sitting up high in this grandstand can see the entire front straightaway, the entrance to the pits, turns 3 and 4. Views from seats down closer to the track offer a view of the short chute, turn 4 and a limited view of the front straightaway. The safety fence tends to obstruct the view of the track for fans sitting down near the track.
GRANDSTAND H: Grandstand H sits next to Grandstand J. It is approximately 100 yards farther south of turn 4 than Grandstand J, but otherwise offers similar views of the track. The seats in this grandstand are bench seats with no back and the grandstand has no roof covering it. As is true with most seating selections at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the best views of the track are found up high in this grandstand in the double letter rows. Fans sitting up high in this grandstand can see the turn 4, the entrants to the pits, and the entire front straightaway. The safety fence tends to obstruct the view of the track for fans sitting down near the track to some extent, but the straightaway, pits, and turn 4 are still visible.
GRANDSTAND C: This grandstand is located on the outside of the front straightaway between Grandstand H and the Paddock. The seats in this grandstand are bench seats with backs and the grandstand partially covered by a roof. Seats closest to the track are not under roof. The closest parking lot to these seats is Lot 2 on the west side of Georgetown Road.
PADDOCK: This grandstand sits on the outside of the track. It occupies the largest section of the front straightaway and straddles the start/finish line. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is partially covered. The box seats closest to the track are not under cover. Seats high in this grandstand offer better views of the front straightaway than seats down close to the track. Fans will experience some minimal obstruction to their view of the track caused by vertical steel support posts for the Penthouse seating above. Seats closer to the track are not obstructed by the vertical support beams, but do suffer from partial obstruction from the safety fence. The seats in this section sit directly across from the pits. It is possible to see turn four and turn 1 from these seats, although the view is from a considerable distance.
PADDOCK PENTHOUSE: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway and occupies the largest section of the front straightaway and straddles the start/finish line. It also sits on top of the Paddock and offers more expansive views of the track. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is covered with a roof. From these seats it is possible to see turn 1, the front straightaway, the pits, the start /finish line and turn four. Due mostly to the elevated vantage point, the views in this grandstand are considered by most to be very good.
GRANDSTAND A: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway near (but not in) turn 1. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is partially covered. The box seats closest to the track are not under cover. The closest parking lot to these seats is Lot 2 on the west side of Georgetown Road.
GRANDSTAND A PENTHOUSE: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway near, but not in, turn 1. This grandstand sits on top of Grandstand A and offers expansive views of the track. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is covered with a roof. The closest parking lot to these seats is Lot 2 on the west side of Georgetown Road. The views from the penthouse seats are considered very good. It is possible to see turn 4, the entire front straightaway, the start/finish line, the pits, turn one and the short chute at the south end of the track from these seats.
GRANDSTAND B: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway near (but not in) turn 1. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is partially covered. The box seats closest to the track are not under cover. The closest parking lot to these seats is Lot 2 on the west side of Georgetown Road.
GRANDSTAND B PENTHOUSE: This grandstand sits on the outside of the front straightaway near (but not in) turn 1. The seats in this section have backs and the grandstand is covered with a roof. This grandstand offers expansive views of the track. The closest parking lot to these seats is Lot 2 on the west side of Georgetown Road.
GRANDSTAND E: This grandstand sits on the outside of the track and occupies most of the 1st turn. The seats in this section have backs on them and this grandstand is partially covered with a roof. The views from this grandstand are best in the double letter rows. Because the seats in this section conform with the turn, there can be a big disparity between views depending upon which section you happen to be sitting in. The apex of the turn is close to section 9. Sections in grandstand past 9 (increasing) will begin to lose sight of the front straightaway.
GRANDSTAND E PENTHOUSE: This grandstand sits on the outside of the track and occupies most of the first turn. It also sits on top of Grandstand E. This grandstand offers expansive views of the track. The seats in this section have backs on them and this grandstand is covered with a roof. If you're looking for the best seats at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, this is where you need to look. Grandstand E Penthouse, Box 7 row A is the best view of the track. From these seats you can see turn four, the front straightaway as it head directly toward you, the pits, the start/finish line, turn 1, the short chute and turn two. These seats rarely come up for purchase anywhere, because the people who have the reservation rights renew them every year. They have been doing so for years and even if they don't use them, they generally get passed down to friends or family members. Still, if you happen to run across tickets in this section, you will be well advised to buy them, even if you have to mortgage the house.
There is a higher demand for seats along the front straightaway, over seats in the third turn, second turn and backstretch, because the race begins and ends there, the celebration to start and celebrate the victory happens there, and all the exciting action in the pits happens there. Tickets here sell for a premium. It may be possible to purchase tickets for seats with better views of the track in turns 2 and three, but you will sacrifice the views of the pits and start/finish line pageantry.
